Red and bluish vessel problems of the skin, such as broken capillaries, vessel clusters and small dilated varicose veins, can be treated with the Nd:YAG laser in one or two sessions. The beam targets the vessel and spares the surrounding tissue.
The laser beam directly targets hemoglobin (the red pigment in blood) circulating inside the vessel. When hemoglobin absorbs the energy and heats up, the vessel wall contracts and closes; the body then gradually absorbs the closed vessel and it becomes less visible.
Because the laser acts only on its target, skin cells and surrounding tissues are not damaged. The Nd:YAG wavelength is suitable for reaching deeper, bluish vessels.
Not every vessel responds the same way; very large varicose veins may be better treated with other methods (sclerotherapy, surgery). This is decided at the examination.
Fine, branching red-purple vessels on the legs and face.
Small red vascular spots and vessel clusters on the skin.
Small bluish varicose dilations (suitability is decided at examination).
Vessel type, diameter and depth are assessed; if there is underlying venous insufficiency, that may need to be addressed first.
Laser pulses are delivered along the vessel. You may feel mild heat and a pinching sensation; sessions are usually short.
Temporary redness, mild swelling or bruising can occur. Sun protection and following your doctor's advice are important. Treatment is planned in one or two sessions and repeated if needed.
One or two sessions are usually enough depending on diameter and type; larger vessels may need more.
Treated vessels close, but new ones can develop over time because of hereditary tendency and other factors.
It is generally well tolerated; mild heat and pinching may be felt.
